Some Publishing Myths vs 21st Century Reality:

MYTH: You need a literary agent to get vetted and connect with a “legitimate” publisher. 

FACT: You no longer need (or want) a literary agent since they are hyper-focused on exclusivity, fame, and popularity. This is especially true if you don’t have a platform. Writers now have the opportunity to take control of their book publishing experience. 

MYTH: A traditional publisher will promote you and your book and help expand your platform.   

FACT: Traditional publishing is a dying, out-dated model that no longer serves the writer-author. Most traditionally-published authors never earn out their advances, are asked to do MOST of the heavy lifting when it comes to marketing and publicity, and are rarely compensated for out-of-pocket expenses including readings and travel. The model is designed for corporate profits and built on a “winner-take-all” model where only the famous succeed.

MYTH: Hybrid publishing is an obvious easy alternative.
